ADHD and autism overdiagnosis: what does the new report say?

Are ADHD and autism being overdiagnosed? The new government-commissioned independent review, chaired by Professor Peter Fonagy, examines rising diagnoses, assessment waiting lists and access to neurodivergent support in England.

Its conclusion requires care: the available evidence does not establish overdiagnosis at scale. However, the review warns that risks of misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis are increasing, while some people with ADHD and autism continue to be overlooked.

The report calls for accurate assessments, timely diagnosis where needed, and earlier support based on individual needs. For neurodivergent professionals and employers, our message is clear: understanding people’s challenges and supporting inclusion at work should remain the priority.
